PHI SONATA 2

Elevate Your Learning and Progression with the PHI SONATA 2

When learning to fly should be as joyful as the flight itself, the PHI SONATA 2 delivers an experience unlike any other in the EN A class. As a direct successor to the acclaimed original SONATA, this second-generation beginner glider builds on its predecessor’s strengths, combining refined aerodynamics, cutting-edge materials, and improved handling.

Developed by Hannes Papesh and the PHI team, the SONATA 2 offers both students and progressing pilots a safe, predictable wing that remains lively enough to enjoy well beyond training. It’s not just a glider for learning—it’s a glider for loving the sport from day one.

Why Choose the PHI SONATA 2?

Many wings promise safety. Fewer deliver fun. The PHI SONATA 2 bridges that gap beautifully, giving you both. From your first takeoff to your hundredth top landing, this wing responds with dependable feedback, calm energy, and unmatched consistency.

Because PHI believes in inclusive access to top-tier design, the SONATA 2 is available in a wide size range, designed to fit all pilot profiles. It’s a wing made to support you—not just in the sky, but also in your growth as a pilot.

A Beginner Wing That Goes Beyond Basics

True EN A Safety Meets Real Performance

While the PHI SONATA 2 is ideal for students, it is far from basic. Certified EN A across all sizes, this wing delivers an ultra-safe flying experience while offering enough responsiveness to remain enjoyable long after flight school ends.

Instructors love it for its predictability. New pilots love it for its low-stress control. And returning flyers appreciate its easy relaunch, stable behavior, and intuitive handling—even in turbulent air.

Perfect for Flight Schools and Individual Use

Whether you’re part of a training program or learning on your own, the SONATA 2 is a forgiving companion. Its pitch-neutral inflation and reluctance to overshoot ensure stress-free takeoffs. On top of that, its broad brake range makes flaring on landing a breeze—even when conditions change quickly.

Inflation, Launch, and Landing Made Easy

Smooth Ground Handling in Every Scenario

One of the standout features of the SONATA 2 is its easy inflation. It rises evenly and smoothly with minimal input, reducing frustration during reverse launches or nil-wind takeoffs. You won’t have to wrestle with the canopy—just a gentle pull, and it’s overhead.

Because of its moderate aspect ratio and balanced line tension, the SONATA 2 behaves with surprising composure on the ground, even for new hands.

Confidence-Boosting Landings

Landing is where many new pilots feel vulnerable. The SONATA 2 minimizes that stress by providing a wide flare window and great energy retention. Your final approach stays under control, and your touchdown feels like second nature—even on shorter or uneven fields.

In-Flight Behavior That Builds Trust

Calm, Controlled, and Connected

Once in the air, the SONATA 2 continues to build confidence. It maintains exceptional stability in pitch, roll, and yaw, allowing you to relax and focus on developing your flying skills. You’ll never feel overwhelmed, yet you’ll always feel in touch with the air around you.

Although designed for low workload flying, the SONATA 2 is still dynamic enough to enjoy thermals, explore longer glides, and start learning basic XC transitions.

Brake Response That Makes Sense

Thanks to a clean internal structure and tuned brake geometry, the wing responds accurately to your inputs. Whether you’re turning into lift or preparing for landing, your commands translate cleanly—offering the feedback you need to refine your control with every flight.

Smart Design That Lasts Longer

Quality Materials for Reliable Longevity

While the SONATA 2 feels light in flight, it’s built to handle frequent use. The wing is constructed using Porcher Skytex 38g/m² on the leading edge and main surfaces. Internally, it incorporates reinforced rib and diagonal structures that keep the shape intact over time—flight after flight, season after season.

Additionally, its line system uses durable sheathed materials that resist wear while maintaining aerodynamic efficiency. For flight schools or recreational pilots who fly often, that durability pays off quickly.

Minimal Maintenance, Maximum Time in the Air

Because of its simplified structure and durable build, the SONATA 2 requires little ongoing maintenance. Line trim remains stable over time, and the canopy shape resists deformation. As a result, you can spend more time flying and less time worrying about inspections.

Sized for All, Inclusive for Every Pilot

A Wing That Fits You Right

PHI has always emphasized inclusivity, and the SONATA 2 carries that tradition forward. With sizes from XS (50 kg) to XL (145 kg), this glider adapts to various wing loadings and pilot body types without losing its balanced behavior.

Whether you’re light-framed, tall, or heavier-built, there’s a SONATA 2 version designed to match your needs while maintaining the same high safety standard.

One Wing, Many Journeys

This wing isn’t just for school use. It’s also a brilliant choice for low-stress flying, local ridge soaring, and mellow thermaling. As your confidence grows, the SONATA 2 stays with you—giving you more flight time, more learning, and more smiles in the air.

Designed by a Master, Built for You

Weight ranges

The take off weight on the scale includes pilot + equipment + wing. For thermal flying it is recommended to stay in the normal energy range. For high wind conditions the high energy (extended) range offers more possibilities.

SONATA 2: The perfect balance

PHI SONATA 2 Features

The SONATA 2 is not only the small sister of the SYMPHONIA 2. Because of the higher safety level it can afford a very big extended weight range to offer the pilot or the school more options. The covered lines make it easier for not so experienced pilots. The take off behaviour as well as the roll stability are excellent: a MUST HAVE for a modern wing in this class.

The feedback from active schooling with the SONATA 2  is confirming, that Phi reached their goal: takoff is very easy, roll stability excellent and most noticeable: the performance stands out from all others.

PHI SONATA 2 testing

As always, Phi’s test pilots put the SONATA 2 through its paces. It pays off: safety trainers value Phi gliders for their good behavior during extreme maneuvers. The same applies to the SONATA 2: it is a pleasure to test it: very unspectacular in its reactions!

PHI SONATA 2 Risers

This wing is delivered with the “Comfort” R10 riser as standard (recommended).

You are free to customize and choose another riser free of charge but this will delay your order by 3-7 days.

If saving every gram is your top priority, you may choose the “Superlight” RZ3 riser. This reduces the weight on the tech data list by around 250-285g but compromises usability and increases speed system pressure.

PHI SONATA 2 FAQ

What is new? What is the difference between the SONATA 1 and the SONATA 2?

The Cell number (40) and the ground shape (flat aspect ratio) are the same. The flat area is the same, but the canopy is more flat: the projected area is bigger. We kept the naming of the first generation for a better orientation, even the SONATA 2 24 has slightly more than 24qm projected: the projected area is 24.64qm.
To enable that less wing curve, the internal structure is more complex (much more diagonals) and the main lines increased from 2 to 3. The lines material changed in the main lines from the LIROS PPSL 275 to the newer PPSLS 180 (SK99). The less wing curve is improving the roll stability.
The canopy material changed from Dominico 40D to Skytex 38 / Easyfly.

Yes: even the SONATA 2 shows a very high level of performance and a very sweet handling, it is designed to be used for the very first flights on the training hill for normally talented students. In the case the students have a lower level of talent, we rather recommend the first flights to be done with the FANTASIA or SOLA.

Can the SONATA 2 be used for paramotoring?

Yes: the SONATA 2 is a very nice paramotor wing. There the evolution from SONATA 1 to SONATA 2 is most obvious. The SONATA 2 has a much better inflation behaviour and is very well roll compensating. DGAC certification is pending…
